Awwwwwwwwwwww
Ravi…Ravi… The name on everyone’s lips is (still!) Ravi. And I had thought that my three absent months would have seen the end of it! No, the name on everyone’s lips is (in a sultry Renée Zellweger voice) Ravi. “O, the poor boy,” they moan, “seized as a scapegoat by radicals!” “O, the poor sacrificial lamb!” they moan.
I could excuse this carping if it were only the breeders’, but it is my own compatriots as well who seem to wish to excuse the fool. “The law is broken! The case was overprosecuted!” they cry. Shall we just sigh “boys will be boys,” and forget? How easy to forget Dharun’s attempt to pervert justice, evidence tampering—the least of his crimes! Can we also forget that his actions against Tyler Clementi were rank sexual harassment? Sexual harassment is predatory, perpetrated against those perceived as vulnerable. Moreover, his actions came with malice aforethought. Is Dharun Ravi a homophobe? Immaterial! He was not prosecuted for what he is, but for what he did. Sexual harassment, invasion of privacy, and destruction of evidence cannot be excused in any wise—irrespective of by or against whom they are perpetrated.
I have survived harassment and abuse, both sexual and physical. It turns my stomach to see my neighbors indignantly bidding me to indulge this idiot, who thought such things some rich joke. He chose to prove himself in court, and thus he has. Now let him accept the consequences.
